Tesla began construction of a dedicated ~5.2M sq-ft Optimus humanoid factory at Giga Texas — foundations done and steel up to four floors by mid-June 2026 — aimed at an (aspirational) long-term 10M robots/year, with a separate ~1M/yr first line being prepped in Fremont. Over 1,000 Optimus Gen-3 units already work inside Tesla's plants. Optimus entered production at Fremont in late July/August 2026, in the floor space vacated by the Model S and Model X lines — Tesla tore those down in about 46 days after the last cars were built in early May. Musk had committed to the timing on the Q1 2026 earnings call and afterwards described the ramp as painfully slow, calling this year's rate "literally impossible to predict" given roughly 10,000 unique parts on an entirely new line. Treat the start, not the scale, as the fact here: Tesla has never published an Optimus production count, no per-unit figure has been disclosed for Fremont, and outside estimates of about 1,000–1,200 units across Fremont and Giga Texas are unconfirmed by the company.

Tesla began a limited robotaxi pilot in Austin — early and small-scale.

Tesla began charging fares for Cybercab rides in Austin on 3 Sep 2026 — the two-seater is built with no steering wheel, no pedals and no mirrors, making it the first purpose-built driverless vehicle to carry paying passengers at scale. There was no launch event: a small group of shareholders and friendly accounts rode first, then the Robotaxi app opened more widely. The same day, NHTSA opened Audit Query AQ26002 covering roughly 1,000 Cybercabs — the self-certified population, not the deployed fleet; about 45 were registered in Texas at launch — asking whether Tesla followed the proper process in self-certifying a car with no controls against crash standards written for conventional vehicles. An audit query is not a recall or a finding of danger — it is a question about the paperwork that made the deployment legal.

Tesla began public Austin robotaxi rides with no human safety monitor in the car (22 Jan 2026); by June it covered the entire Austin metro (~245 sq mi, ~13–20 Model Ys), though remote operators can still intervene.
